This one-hour documentary event paints a dynamic picture of the African American experience during the Civil War.

Sailor. Spy. Sage. Soldier. From the surreptitious to the front lines, courageous Black men and women were actively involved in the Civil War. Their stories are told through some of the most crucial and significant figures of the day including Harriet Tubman, Robert Smalls, Frederick Douglass, the 1st Kansas Colored Volunteer Infantry Regiment and the famed 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment.

NBA legend, bestselling author and esteemed activist Kareem Abdul-Jabbar — along with esteemed Civil War historians and supported with historical materials as well as original illustrations by award-winning artist James Ransome — explores the amazing African American figures who were not only heroes in their own stories but in our nation's as well.
